The surname Gartrell was a little more common. There were 148 Gartrells in the 1881 census, 102 of whom resided in Cornwall. Given the odd variations in spelling of Gartell and Gartrell in the Dorset parish registers, IGI etc. I have concluded (perhaps erroneously) that they are variations of the same name.
